The Ministry of Health and Wellness today announced that public hospitals experiencing difficulties will be offering only emergency services. In light of that, the University Hospital of the West Indies has reviewed its operations. Effective Wednesday, January 19, 2022, the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) will reduce its services to the public by 40 %. This measure will allow us to redeploy scarce resources to the areas that need them most.

This is necessary and unavoidable as we are experiencing a significant increase in COVID-19 infections among staff members as well as COVID-19 admissions. Nonetheless, we will continue to care for patients with time-sensitive conditions including cancers, and will continue to see all emergency cases. We will also ensure the education of our medical, nursing, and paramedical students continues.

We will review this measure on an ongoing basis and make the necessary adjustments as we strive to provide optimal care to our patients. We commit to returning to normal as soon as conditions allow.
